About Huset’s Speedway

Huset’s Speedway is a high banked 3/8 mile dirt oval at 2012 South Splitrock Boulevard in Brandon, South Dakota, between Brandon and Sioux Falls on Highway 11. It was carved out of a soybean field in 1953 and has been racing on and off ever since. Today, after a major renovation, it hosts the richest sprint car race in the world and runs weekly Sunday night racing from Mother’s Day through Labor Day weekend.

From a Soybean Field to a National Stage

Farmer and businessman Til Huset cut the track out of his soybean field in 1953. It opened in 1954, ran through 1955, then sat closed for two seasons before Huset sold it to the Sioux Falls Stock Car Association, who reopened it in July 1958.

The name changed to Badlands Motor Speedway in 2015 when the track was sold to Chuck Brennan of the Badlands Entertainment Group. Under that ownership it ran World of Outlaws races, a $100,000 to win 410 sprint car show and a $250,000 Gold Cup, along with concerts, monster trucks, tractor pulls and Endurocross. Then it closed in 2017 and stayed dark for three years.

In July 2020 Tod Quiring, owner of Jackson Motorplex in Minnesota, bought the property, restored the historic Huset’s name and reopened it that August with a $20,000 to win All Star Circuit of Champions race. The facility has been substantially renovated since, and it is now regarded as one of the most polished dirt tracks in the country.

Sunday Night Racing

Weekly racing runs Sunday nights from Mother’s Day through Labor Day weekend. Admission gates open at 5:00 and racing concludes by 10:15, which is a firm finish time most tracks do not commit to.

The weekly divisions include Cressman Sanitation 410 Outlaw Sprint Cars, the RaceSaver Sprint Car Series, Nordstrom’s Late Model Street Stocks, USRA Stock Cars and USRA Hobby Stocks. Two classes of sprint cars on a weekly card is unusual anywhere, and on a high banked 3/8 mile it is the fastest weekly racing in the region.

High Bank Nationals

The signature event is the High Bank Nationals, a four day sprint car race in June that pays $300,000 to win. That is the highest paying sprint car race in the world, and it brings the top 410 drivers in the country to a town of ten thousand people in eastern South Dakota.

The rest of the calendar carries serious weight too. The World of Outlaws visit for the Huset’s Shootout, the Midwest Sprint Touring Series runs 410 sprint cars here, and the Labor Day weekend tripleheader closes the season. USAC has raced here as well.

Getting There

Huset’s sits between Sioux Falls and Brandon on Highway 11. From I-90 east of Sioux Falls, take exit 406 and go three miles south on State Route 11.

That location puts it in reach of a large population, and it sits at the center of a genuine cluster of dirt tracks. Park Jefferson is about an hour southwest, Jackson Motorplex is an hour and a half east, and several Iowa and Minnesota tracks are within reach.
